AD information and tools
Background information
The following documents provide some invaluable background reading for anyone interested in anaerobic digestion:
- The On-Farm Anaerobic Digestion Benchmark Study: This study was undertaken to provide an informational benchmark from which individuals and groups in B.C.'s agricultural sector can inform decisions pertaining to the development of on-farm anaerobic digestion systems. These benchmarks have been drawn based on the analysis and summation of feasibility studies developed for twelve (12) farm-sites in B.C. The twelve sites were selected with the intention of representing geographic, demographic and circumstantial variances. For a copy of the 12 Site Feasibility Studies, please click here
- Canadian Biogas Study: Benefits to the Economy, Environment and Energy: This study reviews the diverse range of production opportunities in Canada, and looks at the specific benefits from anaerobic digestion available to farms, businesses and communities.
- Farm to Fuel Developers’ Guide to Biomethane and Farm to Fuel Developers’ Guide to Biomethane as a Vehicle Fuel: These guides were written to help farmers determine if biomethane production is a good fit for their farm and operations.
- elorin Bioenergy Feasibility Study: This study, completed by the Eastern Lake Ontario Regional Innovation Network (elorin), provides some basic information on anaerobic digestion.
- Microbiological Handbook for Biogas Plants: This Swedish handbook provides some very technical in-depth information into controlling the biogas process to ensure maximum biogas yield.
- Utilisation of digestate from biogas plants as biofertiliser: This IEA Bioenergy brochure describes the impact of anaerobic digestion on the fertilizer value of manure.
- AD 101. This document provides some high level background information about the technology.
Anaerobic digestion calculators
Several anaerobic digestion calculators currently exist to help individuals conduct prefeasibility assessments. Two such calculators are:
- FarmWare from AgSTAR / US EPA.
- Techno-economic Assessment of Anaerobic Digestion Systems from Ministry of Agriculture. While the calculator is yet to be released, the document contains useful information on anaeroic digestion.
Technology & service suppliers
ADIAC does not guarantee the quality, accuracy or completeness of any information, products, processes or services mentioned in any of these documents. Furthermore, reference to or mention of any products, processes or services does not constitute or imply a recommendation or endorsement.
- List of Qualified Suppliers for Services Related to Integrated Resource Recovery:This document, compiled by the Ministry of Community and Rural Development, is a pre-qualified list of suppliers for Integrated Resource Recovery (IRR) projects.
- Industry Directory for On-Farm Biogas Recovery Systems: This EPA directory provides a list of consultants, designers, developers, equipment vendors, and other providers of biogas energy services.
- Anaerobic Digestion Contact List: This OMAFRA list contains names of companies and individuals involved in the business of AD.
Useful websites
- Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA): Developed to assist producers in Ontario who are interested in adopting anaerobic digesters, this site has a wealth of anaerobic digestion-related information.
- AgSTAR/US EPA: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's AgSTAR Program is a voluntary outreach and educational program that promotes the recovery and use of methane from animal manure.
- British AD site: Developed by the National Non-Foods CC, with the support of Departemnt for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs and Department of Energy & Climate Change, this site is England's official information portal on anaerobic digestion.
